Changes of Body Temperature and Blood Gases After Hypothermic Extracorporeal Circulation for Open Heart Surgery

Abstract
It is anticipated that body temperature change after hypothermic extracorporeal circulation for open heart surgery might affect arterial blood gases. Therefore changes of arterial blood gases(pH, PaCO2, Pa02) attendant upon change of body temperature(rectal temperature) were observed in 22cases admitted in ICU after open heart surgery.
The following results were obtained:
1. Mean rectal temperature was 35.7¡ÆC on admission to ICU, it gradually rose and became re warming to over 37¡ÆC within 6 hours.
2. The cases of acidemia(pH 7.35) before re warming showed a tendency to become nearly normal after re warming, but the cases of alkalemia(pH 7.45) before re warming were not returned after re warming.
3. A lot of cases of hypocarbia(PaCO2 35mmHg) before re warming showed a close approximation to normal after re warming.
4. Mean Pa% of 293 mmHg before re warming was changed to 181 mmHg after re warming.
